The Bentley Mulsanne ‘Speed’ has been launched at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, offering a significant performance upgrade over the existing Mulsanne.
Engineers at Crewe have fiddled with the 6¾ litre Twin-Turbo V8 engine to produce 530bhp which pushes the 2½ tonne car to 60mph in less than 5 seconds, and keeps on pushing until topping out at 190mph, given a long enough stretch of desert.
The desert is a big market for Bentley. The company has already been awarded the prestigious Middle East Motor award for its GT V8 model, and hopes this new Flagship limousine will be equally well received in the region.
In China, another, and arguably more significant market for Bentley, the limousine is a very important status symbol and few cars can match the big Bentley’s appeal among the country’s billionaires. As CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer pointed out at the launch of the new car, “We are the choice of many high achievers, independent thinkers, world leaders and Royal Families around the world.”
I can’t imagine the Queen asked for more speed, but in a region where the police drive Lamborghini’s and the oil Sheikh next door has a Bugatti, having that little five-letter word on your Bentley can make a world of difference.
